Bagerhat’s historic boat race

A traditional boat race, or nouka-baicch in the local lingo, was held on the Bhairab River in the district town on Sunday.

The race was started from the Muniganj Bridge adjacent to the district town and the finish line on the Bhairab as it flows through the Bagerhat municipality park area.

Some 16 teams from Bagerhat, Gopalganj, Madaripur and Khulna districts competed in the race organised by the Bagerhat municipality.

For the very first time, two female teams from Gopalganj also participated in the race, opening the gate to a new dimension for the historic race, and its place in the community.

A team led Talukdar Nazmul Kabir, chairman of Mallikerber union of Rampal upazila in Bagerhat district, ran out winners, receiving prize money of Tk 1 lakh for their efforts. Even runners-up ‘ Vai Vai Jolpuri’ got Tk 80,000 while ‘Ma Shitola’, a team led by Jahirul Islam Mithu, a former chairman of Bemorta union in Sadar upazila, was rewarded Tk 50,000 coming in third. unb
